Understanding Indian College Attendance Rules

Course-Wise Attendance Policies

Common in autonomous engineering colleges and deemed universities (e.g. VIT, SRM, KL, Manipal). You must maintain 75% in each individual theory subject and laboratory course. Having 95% in Mathematics does not compensate for having 60% in Operating Systems; you will still be debarred from the Operating Systems final exam.

Semester Aggregate Policies

Common in affiliating state universities (e.g. Mumbai University, Delhi University, Anna University, VTU). Total classes across all subjects are summed together. As long as your overall aggregate exceeds 75% (or 65% with approved medical condonation), you receive your hall ticket to sit for all papers.

College Attendance FAQs

Common questions regarding university exam rules and academic regulations.

Q1.Do all Indian colleges require 75% attendance?

Most Indian regulatory councils—including the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Bar Council of India (BCI), and National Medical Commission (NMC)—mandate 75% attendance. Certain institutions have higher requirements (e.g., NMIMS requires 80% aggregate), while some institutes like BITS Pilani famously do not enforce mandatory physical attendance.

Q2.Is attendance evaluated course-wise or overall across all subjects?

This depends on the university's academic regulations. Universities like VIT, SRM, and autonomous institutes evaluate attendance per course/subject (requiring 75% in each subject individually). State technical universities like AKTU or VTU often evaluate both aggregate semester attendance and individual subject minimums.

Q3.Can college attendance affect internal marks?

Yes! Many universities allocate 5 to 10 marks of Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) directly based on attendance tiers. For instance: 75–80% (2 marks), 80–85% (3 marks), 85–90% (4 marks), and >90% (5 full marks).

Q4.How do I calculate attendance when the semester is still in progress?

Use our calculator above. Enter your current attended and total classes to get your current percentage, and use the upcoming classes field to project your final attendance standing before exams.
